RRD’s innovative package design successfully combines functionality with seasonal appeal and interactivity

CHALLENGE

A global toy brand sought a sustainable, paper-based gift-with-purchase (GWP) solution that would surpass traditional packaging. Their goal: a decorative, long-lasting, and functional item — one that consumers would want to keep and reuse. However, the project presented several challenges, including an expedited timeline and a relatively limited budget. 

SOLUTION

The company entrusted RRD Asia with this project. An initial, in-depth consultation with the brand enabled the rapid development of a packaging design that successfully combined functionality with seasonal appeal and interactivity.

Specifically, the packaging design featured the following:

  • Sustainable material utilization: The entire GWP solution was crafted exclusively from paper, balancing the brand’s sustainability requirements with premium aesthetics and functional performance. The design enabled the item to function as both a gift that customers would wish to display and one that encouraged playfulness. 
  • Customizable ink solution: RRD used photochromic ink technology to create a dynamic visual response to sunlight exposure — this specialty ink changes color when exposed to sunlight and other UV light, then returns to its original color when the light source is removed. The photochromic ink enhanced the packaging’s color vibrancy, delivering a distinctive, interactive experience that elevates consumer engagement.
  • Creative design: Working closely with the client, RRD developed a modular design amplified by 3D-simulated print technology, adding depth, visual impact, and structural clarity to the final execution.
  • Precise color management: A premium color sampling process, including white, was conducted to ensure accurate on-press color reproduction and overall material performance.

RESULTS

The project was successfully mass-produced and deployed, helping make the brand memorable and compelling for marketplace consumers. Results included:

  • Sustainability: The solution met the client’s sustainability goals due to its 100% paper-based construction, reinforcing their environmental commitment
  • Enhanced consumer engagement: The innovative ink technology provided an engaging interactive experience designed to boost sales and enhance user satisfaction
  • Efficient, controlled implementation: RRD applied robust production controls throughout the manufacture of 5,000 units, supported by a comprehensive inspection process, to ensure quality consistency and on-time delivery
