RRD’s packaging and warehouse solutions decrease manufacturer’s time to market, provide significant cost savings
CHALLENGE
A leading manufacturer of high-quality archery equipment was obtaining all of their packaging from an overseas supplier via a packaging broker. As a result, they often faced long lead times, which caused significant challenges because their dynamic business environment didn’t always allow for advance planning. They often found themselves paying for expensive overnight air freight in order to compensate for the prolonged transit times.
The manufacturer faced another challenge as well: They did not have enough warehouse space to store their packaging, a situation that had consequences in operational efficiencies, inventory issues, and customer dissatisfaction. They sought a partner who could store their packaging and release it to them on a weekly basis. The manufacturer also wanted to gain control of their pricing, including air freight costs.
SOLUTION
Following consultation with the manufacturer’s operations, supply chain, and product development teams, RRD’s packaging experts recommended relocating the company’s rigid box and folding carton production to a North America-based facility. This move would allow the manufacturer to significantly reduce their time to market.
RRD also took on the responsibility of packaging design and development. The manufacturer delivered their latest archery accessories to RRD, who ideated and engineered new packaging structures and protective supporting material to encompass each product.
In addition, RRD devised a solution for the manufacturer’s warehouse dilemma. By storing their packaging in a warehouse within close proximity, packaging could be delivered to them on the same day if needed.
RESULTS
Following RRD’s initial step of reshoring the manufacturer’s packaging production, additional actions and results included:
- RRD took ownership of the design and development of the manufacturer's packaging
- Warehousing was provided to ensure the manufacturer had enough space for their product packaging — allowing for same-day deliveries
- The manufacturer realized time and cost (freight) savings by moving production away from their previous offshore vendor
- By collaborating with a provider with end-to-end capabilities, the manufacturer experienced streamlined operations, cost savings, and a variety of strategic advantages
